In Maryland, Eyes Turn to PG County

Published: Nov 2, 2010 by Will Urquhart Filed under: Elections Rally/Protest/Demonstration

UPPER MARLBORO: Democrats in Maryland have directed a lot of their GOTV efforts this election cycle towards Prince George's County, an area that President Obama carried with almost 89% of the vote in 2008. Several Democratic candidates, including Governor O'Malley, held a rally in Upper Marlboro late Monday night, making one final push in PG County to urge supporters to vote and volunteer.

90 Second Summaries

Published: Sep 14, 2010 by Will Urquhart Filed under: 90 Second Summaries Elections
A while back, a couple of us here at Sum of Change got involved in meetings with a great group of folks about working together to provide insider reporting of Capitol Hill with an outsider perspective. In time, we became Main Street Insider. Today, Main Street Insider released a new show, 90 Second Summaries.

The purpose of 90 Second Summaries is simple, provide citizens on Main Street with a quick synopsis of what a bill is all about. The first three episodes come out today, tomorrow and Thursday, with new ones every following Monday. Each video comes with a one-page summary (which you can view online or download as a pdf) containing everything you will need to learn even more about any piece of legislation.

Without further ado, presenting Season 1, Episode 1: H.R. 4790, Shareholder Protection Act

, Brasilia 6If you think corporations have too much influence in politics, just wait. In January, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that giant corporations can pour money directly into elections. They can spend billions on attack ads and robocalls to support or oppose candidates, all the while avoiding disclosure. Progressives cannot let this stand. The panel will present the full spectrum of remedies to Citizens United—including federal, state and local legislation to restrict corporate spending in elections, public financing of campaigns and a constitutional amendment—and a plan for implementing them.

For this morning, we are releasing part 1 of our video highlights from Saturday's panel: Undoing Citizens United: A Comprehensive Plan to Prevent Corporations from Buying Elections

Today we are going to discuss whether or not corporations are indeed the same as living people and a little about why we need to stand up and fight on this issue. To start us off, Robert Weissman, the President of Public Citizen, gives us a great, quick explanation of some of the more significant differences between corporations and human beings:
